From Adoptee Identity to Unfolding: Our Story, and Where We're Going

We started as Adoptee Identity, a company built by adoptees for adoptees and their village. A space to explore questions surrounding identity, belonging, and community. 6 in 10 Americans are connected to adoption, and this experience almost never shows up in how we talk about identity, family, or belonging. We began with a conversation card deck, a workbook, and a facilitator's guide. We were determined to provide resources that welcomed curiosity with a common language for deepening our conversations surrounding adoption and identity.

That determination took us into workplaces, colleges, and conference halls. When we spoke to people connected to adoption, we heard a resounding need for much more than talking about their experiences once a year at a workshop. They expressed wanting a daily practice - something they can tune into through everyday life moments and milestones.

That’s when we knew Unfolding was what we needed to build.

Unfolding is a wellbeing app, built by and for the adoption constellation, beginning with adoptees and adoptive parents. It brings the same research foundation from our materials, ambiguous loss and psychological safety, into a daily flow of reflection, journaling, and grounding practices. Each day opens with a card meant to meet you where you are, whether that's curiosity, grief, gratitude, or all three at once.

Adoptee Identity is still who we are. It's the research, the relationships, lived experiences, and the years of listening that made this possible. But going forward, Unfolding is how we show up. It's the name on the app, the voice in your daily practice, and the place this work now lives.

We are all unfolding.

Unfolding is free for the month of July.
