Built by adoptees, because we needed this.
Adoption is complex. Doctor's visits, birthdays, holidays, and everything in between — for adoptees, everyday moments carry layers of loss and gratitude, joy and anger, vulnerability and resilience.
Unfolding is something simple to return to daily, acknowledging that identity development for adoptees lasts a lifetime. Healing requires normalizing curiosity and nuance around feelings of belonging. Unfolding was built to develop a practice around the themes that arise in life's small and big moments and milestones, and to invite the people in an adoptee’s life into that work, too.

FOUNDER
Zoë Hansen-DiBello, PhD — Founder & CEO
Zoë Hansen-DiBello, PhD, is the Founder & CEO of Adoptee Identity Corp. and creator of Unfolding, a wellbeing app built by and for adoptees and their village. A TEDx speaker, entrepreneur, and adoptee herself, Zoë built Unfolding alongside her co-founder and fellow adoptee, Ellie Robinson, to fill the gap she experienced firsthand, a framework explicitly centered on the lived experiences of adoptees, anchored in everyday moments.
Born in Ithaca, NY, Zoë was adopted at 11 days old and raised in Providence, RI. Her family made history in 1993 as the first same-sex couple in Rhode Island to go before a judge for cross-adoption, legally recognizing what had always been true, she and her sister had two moms.
When Zoë gave birth to her daughter in 2016, the experience of genetic mirroring deepened her curiosity about her own identity, not just as a mother but as an adoptee. That curiosity led to the research, the framework, and ultimately Unfolding.
Throughout her career, Zoë has founded programs and led the growth, strategy, and scaling of nonprofit initiatives. She holds a PhD from the University of Massachusetts, BA from the University of Connecticut, is a proud graduate of Leadership Southcoast, and recognized Southeastern YWCA Woman of Distinction.
